Monday

Students came in and did a review activity about the scientific method.  After the review activity, we learned about a river in China that has turned red due to pollution. We made a few guesses as to what may have caused this to happen.  After watching our daily science video about how a toilet works (today's theme is the scientific method in real life), we set up our science notebooks.  Instructions can be found below.  If a student loses his or her notebook, they can set up a new one.  Students have the ability to use this website to obtain any notes they may need for projects or tests so there is flexibility should a notebook be lost.   After setting up notebooks, we did a heart rate experiment using the xbox knect to learn more about the control and variable of an experiment.  We finished up with an interactive lab safety activity and the germ video about why we always wash our hands after a lab.

We should get to learning about current events tomorrow or Wednesday and will complete them in class.  If we do not get to this, then I will push back the first current events until next Friday.

Tuesday

Students logged in a new assignment and answered 2 questions about the scientific method and lab safety.  We then took a few minutes and reflected about 9/11 and watched a brief presentation on Brainpop regarding the events of the day.  After taking a short stretch break, we watched a scientific method video in which students had to figure out why the video was odd and how the group of students that shot the video were able to do what they did (walking backwards but singing fowards).  Students then learned how to do a current events for my class.  We watched a cookie monster video and I took students step by step through the process of writing a current event.  Once completed, students turned the current event in and I told the class that this would count as one of the two that are due on Friday.  I have included a template below so students can print or type it up.  I will also provide copies of the template in class.  We will complete another current event in class this week so that I know students are able to do them at home.  Students can work on current events in class any time I am showing a video or students can choose articles from newspapers, internet, or magazines.  Click on the homework link from the main page of this website to learn more about current events.

Current Events Template in Word Format  - just type it up and print!

Current Events in PDF format - for printing purposes.

Please email or call with any questions regarding current events.  Current Events are worth 25 points...I will grade the papers that were turned in as soon as possible and return.

Wednesday

Students came in and completed a review activity about the scientific method and the metric system.  This included an exercise from the textbook.  Students can access the textbook by clicking on the "online textbook information" from the main page of this website and following the sign up instructions.  If you are unable to do this, let me know and I will add you to the textbook list.  Textbooks can also be sent home via written request.   After the daily science, we watched a time warp video about juggling chainsaws and talked about how this was relevant to the scientific method.  We then completed two interactives about the metric system and began our study of geochemistry with a classification exercise.  We finished up class by having students complete a table in which they found examples of mass, weight, scientific method, and metric system from a series of short videos.

Thursday

Students came in and did a review of the metric system for the warm up.  After going over the daily science and showing the top story (planet discovered within the habitable zone of a double star system), we watched "The nano song" and learned about nanotechnology.  We then took a few minutes and finished up our epic science table from yesterday inwhich students found examples of the scientific method, mass, weight, and the metric system. I also reviewed Physical Properties with the class.  I explained the difference between mass and weight with an online demonstration of a person's weight on other worlds.  We also discussed a person's age on the other planets since rotation, time, and revolution are physical properties of planets. As an extension of the vocabulary, I did a lesson on Mars and used the new vocabulary as part of the lesson.  We viewed a brief powerpoint, looked at 3D images of Mars with the red/blue glasses, and watched a few short video clips about the planet as a follow up.  Students wrote an in-class current event about Mars and turned it in a part of the homework this week.  Students had the option of turning the current event in before the end of class, finishing it at home, or finishing it after tomorrow's lab.
